This JD Edwards World client is a distributor of automotive tire repair supplies and equipment. They are a division of a diversified manufacturing company with products in the industrial, agricultural, food processing, healthcare, and consumer markets.

The Problem

This rollout was a result of business acquisition and growth across countries. This client had grown their business by expanding their operations in Canada and then bringing their operations to various countries in Central America, including Guatemala, El Salvador, and Panama. The parent company was already operating JD Edwards World, and the goal was to bring these new branches onto the centralized JD Edwards instance. 

One particular challenge was that while the parent company was already running JD Edwards World, they had not activated the multi-currency option in JD Edwards. Because of these new international branches, they multi-currency function was needed.

The primary benefit of implementing JD Edwards at the client’s branch locations was better visibility to operations and access to data for key performance metrics. Another benefit was the standardization of business practices across all operating units. Additionally, the company gained operating efficiencies by letting the system process multi-currency transactions rather than having to do the transaction and translation calculations by hand.

Thanks to this rollout, the parent company can now monitor the branch’s inventory levels, sales order backlog, manufacturing backlog, vendor relationships, and financial performance throughout the month. This increased visibility helps these two formerly disparate operations function as one cohesive business.

An additional challenge was working around multilingual considerations, menus, and other content that needed to be translated into Spanish, as well as the consideration of different tax laws in Central America.

The Solution

Our team has developed a strategy with common steps for JD Edwards rollouts, but of course, no two rollouts are the same. For this project, our team:

  • Visited the new branch of the company for a discovery session to learn how this newly acquired business operated and what they required for an ERP system
  • Designed a configuration in JD Edwards that would achieve what the branch needed without negatively impacting the parent company’s implementation, essentially, melding the new branch’s business process with the parent company’s business processes to make everything consistent
  • Stood each branch up as a separate company in JD Edwards and went through the standard implementation procedures such as version configuration, loading master files, etc.
  • Made changes in the configuration of JDE by going into the files to update currency flags and codes as if the multi-currency option had been on the entire time
  • Used JDE batch jobs and SQL to populate the appropriate fields and thoroughly test the multi-currency functionality before activating it
  • Worked around a standard JD Edwards feature in order to comply with different government regulations
